There are many things you can do to improve your brain power and overall mental health. The main topic of this site is nootropics, and not surprisingly, that’s partially on what this post focuses. But, there are also other ways of giving your brain a boost, some of which can be nearly as effective.
Brain Improvement and Nootropics
By far, my favorite way of promoting mental health and increasing its power is through the use of supplements. Nootropics supplements to be exact. They’re a form of a brain hack which has become quite popular in recent years.
From students all the way up the corporate ladder, people are taking advantage. They use smart drugs to boost their minds by increasing mental abilities like focus and memory retention. The end effect is they’re getting more things done with better efficiency.
Take students as an example. These kinds of brain-enhancing drugs are perfect come exam time, with late nights and cram sessions abound. Not only do nootropics improve alertness (adrafinil and modafinil are prime examples), but they can also take someone’s memory to a whole new level. By using the right supplement, a student can retain information better and recall it with ease come exam day.
Hacking Your Brain Without Nootropics
While smart drugs are a trendy and powerful way to boost your brain, there is more than one way to skin a cat. Those ways don’t involve taking any drugs whatsoever. They’re lifestyle changes and may require a bit more effort, but are well worth it (and I’d like to point out are not mutually exclusive with nootropics use).
Sleep Improves Mind
The first thing I recommend is getting enough sleep for your brain. Your body and mind function at a much slower and far from optimal pace when you are tired. There is no replacement for not having sufficient rest. Everything else is just a short-term patch.
While the adage is that you should get eight hours of sleep per night, every person differs. You may require more or less. Shoot for at least seven hours and adjust from there. If you aren’t getting enough sleep, believe me, you’ll know it. Whether you admit it or not, that’s a different story.
Feeding Your Brain
Following a proper diet can have a massive effect on how well your cognitive functions. Everything you put in your body will in one way or another affect it. If you load up with junk, you really can’t expect your body to function at its best.
We have all been beaten over the head with the food pyramid and should know what it means to have a proper diet. The most significant change maker for me was increasing my intake of fruit, veggies, and water. Since I started, my brain fog all but disappeared. And I’m sure there were many other less noticeable benefits as well.
Quick Cognitive Improvement
For a quick pick-me-up, a cup of black coffee will do the trick. Caffeine can do good things to your brain and it’s an easy and quick hack. Coffee is, of course, a short-term solution, but when the need suddenly arises, and nootropics are not an option, there is nothing else like it.
Be sure not to overdo it. If you find yourself needing multiple cups throughout the day just to stay awake, coffee isn’t what you need. Get more sleep instead. As I mentioned before, getting sufficient rest is a critical element of improving your mind.
Those are but a few ways to give you a little shot to the brain and boost its abilities. Some are easier to implement than others, but all are well worth it. I tend to mix and match, nootropics including, and suggest you experiment as well. It’s what a real brain hacker does.
